Description:
How can we encourage students to extend their
knowledge in Algebra 2, Pre Calculus, and Calculus? The TI-89 can be used to
not only connect ideas, but more importantly to foster more in-depth
understanding. We will begin by discussing Algebra topics, such as using
functional notation, expanding and factoring expressions, and solving equations
and inequalities. Various graphing techniques will be discussed, such as
transferring points from a graph to the home screen, auto scaling, graphing
piecewise functions (using Boolean Algebra), graphing a composition of
functions, and drawing horizontal lines, vertical lines, and inverses. Our
topics will conclude with discussion of Calculus, such as limits, average rate
of change, derivatives (algebraically and graphically), finding the equation of
a tangent line to a curve, Riemann sums, integrals, implicit differentiation,
solving differential equations, and slope fields.
