Description: This one day workshop will look at a variety of tools that can be used to help at risk middle school and high school students visualize the mathematics that they are learning in their mathematics classroom. The class will alternate between hands-on activities with the TI Graphing calculator and demonstrations of other software and websites that can be used in a special education or mathematics classroom. Each of the activities will relate to questions that students will see on their Mathematics MCAS Exams in grades 8 and 10.

The day will begin with a one-hour overview of the TI-84 graphing calculator. Handouts during this portion of the class can be used with students not familiar with the use of the graphing calculator. Next, teachers will participate in activities and explorations in the Data Analysis, Statistics and Probability Strand followed by the Patterns, Relations and Algebra strand. If time, there will be a brief overview of geometry software that can be used with students to help visualize difficult concepts in geometry. Participants will leave with activities that can be used in preparation of the grades 8-10 mathematics MCAS exam. No technology proficiency is required.

Throughout the day, participants will discuss various strategies they currently use, along with a discussion on the appropriate use of technology within the mathematics curriculum. The basic philosophy of the presenter will be to address each of the topics presented, numerically, algebraically and graphically.
