Description: This workshop will provide teachers with a complete model for teaching the electromagnetic spectrum through the use of internet resources, models, and kinesthetic activities.  It consists of a demonstration which illustrates the power of models, a pre-assessment activity on understanding exponents, an activity to construct and compare a different model of the spectrum than the model commonly used in textbooks and on posters, and a post-assessment task to construct a model of the electromagnetic spectrum. All activities are aligned to National Science Standards and Benchmarks and are designed to involve participants in a series of activities meant to show how scientists view, study, and examine the universe. Participants will study and discuss models in general and then construct exponential and linear models of the spectrum; finally, each participant will construct, describe and critique their own model of the electromagnetic spectrum using the provided scoring rubric. Participants will then work through a series of stations to explore different types of sources and how they are detected, emitted, and absorbed.  All activities are available online for teachers and links will be provided and demonstrated.
